'Unfair' parking fines system should be overhauled - campaigners

Road signs should be simplified, any profit returned to the Treasury and motorists should be compensated if they are given an incorrect penalty notice. 
In addition, the number of mobile CCTV operators should be reduced and investigations should be held into areas where fines are “statistically excessive”.

MOTORING organisations are preparing to make legal challenges to local authorities which use CCTV ‘snoop’ tactics to raise Town Hall revenues.
They are launching the Motorists’ Manifesto this-morning (Tuesday) which calls for parking enforcement reform. 
Lord Lucas and actor Tom Conti have set up a fighting fund for the manifesto which has been drawn up by the London Motorists Action Group, the Drivers’ Alliance and the Motorists’ Legal Challenge Fund.

A BOLDON businessman has complained to police about a council parking contract.
Northumbria Police's economic crime unit is believed to be looking at matters raised by campaigner Neil Herron, who runs Boldon Business Park-based Parking Appeals Ltd. 
It relates to Sunderland City Council's handling of the transfer of the parking enforcement contract when NCP Parking Ltd was replaced by NCP Service Ltd in 2007/8, and whether that adhered to European Union procurement directives.

TOWN Hall officials have been left with red faces after handing a driver an ‘illegal’ parking ticket.
East Staffordshire Borough Council slapped the unnamed motorist with a £70 fine — which can be reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days — for parking in Hawkins Lane, Burton, on Friday.

Supermarket parking fines are not enforcable, claims Leicestershire shopper

Parking tickets issued at supermarkets may not be enforceable, according to a campaigner.
Tesco, in Hamilton, Leicester, and Aldi, in Blaby, have introduced fines to stop people parking in unauthorised areas or using disabled spaces when they do not have a blue badge.
Drivers who break the rules are given a £40 fine.

London councils' three-decade parking error revealed

Five London councils may have to repay millions of pounds of parking fines to motorists after a BBC London investigation proved hundreds of their parking bays have been unlawfully operated for decades.
There are 346 diplomatic parking sites in the city, reserved for foreign embassy staff.
But because they are not "standard" bays, councils have to get permission from the secretary of state for transport before installing road signs.
